The Heart Sutra, one of the most prominent texts in Buddhism, states that “form is emptiness, emptiness is form”. This apparent paradox is regarded a core philosophy of Japanese design and culture, where absence may be as important as presence. This principle is summed up in the concept of “ma”, which has served as the main source of inspiration for this collection.

The character for “ma” (間) is a combination of the characters for “gate” on top, with “sun” below - an image of light beaming through the empty space of a doorway. The Japanese meaning is not easily translatable but it connotes a pause, gap, silence or negative space, which, in Japanese culture, are considered positive features rather than flaws.
